Digital Marketing is all about people - not technology. To excel at promoting your business or service online you still need to go back to marketing basics.

50 years ago we learnt:

  • That people buy benefits - not features.

  • To never release any info that didn't answer the question "what's in it for me?"

  • To focus on how much somethings saves - not how much it costs.

  • To always put yourself in the customer's shoes.

The fundementals of Digital Marketing are the same as non-Digital Merketing except their are new tools to use. In today's world it is much easier. Years ago we needed to spend time talking to customers through visits and focus groups to understand what they were looking for. Today, you simply use software tools to analyse their Google searches. Also, you can easily analyse what your competitors are doing and pinch their insights and good ideas.


DIgital Marketing has a myriad of software tools to help you understand what millions of people around the world are doing online. A good example is finding good keywords and phrases for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). There is no point in using these until you understand your audience and potential customers.


If you are planning to pay someone to find new business by making it easier to find your website start getting worried if they don't begin by asking detailed questions about your company, your products and especially the profile of your customers. If they only talk about themselves and how they can increase your traffic then that is a red flag.
